Why Digital Media and Learning?

Online virtual worlds allow students to learn about biodiversity conservation by trial and error; something that is impossible in the real world.

Description of Current Work:

The Encyclopedia of Life is an international collaboration to create a website for every species on earth. I manage the project’s Synthesis Center at the Field Museum, which recruits scientists around the world to contribute to EOL and authenticate all EOL content. As a web 2.0 project, EOL is particularly interested in digital learning, and we are using projects like WhyReef to spearhead development of age-appropriate scientific content and to broaden our educational impact.

Selected Publications/Projects/Articles/Press:

WhyReef is our second foray into digital learning using virtual worlds. Previously, we developed the successful pilot project “I Dig Tanzania!” in cooperation with Global Kids. In IDT, teens in New York and Chicago used Teen Second Life to learn from and interact with paleontologists excavating fossils in Tanzania.
