Davidson & Goldberg: Digital Media and Learning Competition Update
HASTAC’s co-founders celebrate the closing of another Digital Media and Learning Competition and note the progress of projects supported under the inaugural competition.

by Cathy N. Davidson and David Theo Goldberg
The second Digital Media and Learning Competition closed last week. We received another groundswell of applications from the field, including those from “Young Innovators,” as well as from projects in ten pilot countries eligible to submit stand-alone applications this year. Stay tuned for the winners of this year’s Competition in April of 2009.
In the meantime, it’s a great occasion to reflect on the progress of the exciting projects supported under the first Digital Media and Learning Competition. First up is Howard Rheingold‘s Social Media Classroom, a public collaboratory space for educators and learners interested in using social media. As HASTAC’s Sheryl Grant writes, the Social Media Classroom is a tool for students and educators to “co-mingle participatory learning with social media,” and join a community of practice. To read more about Social Media Classroom, you can check out Sheryl Grant’s post on the HASTAC site. You can also check out the student-run HASTAC Scholars Forum on “Participatory Learning” with Howard Rheingold. Please also visit the DML Winners’ Hub for updates on the other Digital Media and Learning Competition projects.
Now is also a good time to thank all of the team at Duke and at UCHRI for their hard work on this competition and to thank Craig Wacker, our program officer at the MacArthur Foundation, and Connie Yowell, Director of Education at the MacArthur Foundation for their vision and leadership.
